Somalia lawmakers approve Somali Military to join EASF

Raxanreeb Online Mogadishu: Somalia’s House of the People gave the final nod to the agreement establishing the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF), stamping Somalia’s commitment to regional security enforcement.

The historic vote saw 144 lawmakers vote in favor of the agreement approval, one opposed, and two abstained among the 147 lawmakers present.

The voting took place on Wednesday during the 17th meeting of the 7th parliamentary sessions; the bill will now proceed to the upper house for debate and approval before the president assents to it.

The votes mark a significant step towards ensuring that Somalia contributes forces to the EASF.

The EASF was founded in 2004 with the establishment of the Eastern Africa Standby Brigade following a decision made by the African Union in Addis Ababa. It comprises the military, police, and civilians.

The Deputy Defence Minister noted the agency the lawmakers have demonstrated in approving the bill, which he said has shown Somalia’s commitment to the course.
