Mogadishu — The Federal Government of Somalia and the Republic of Türkiye have jointly launched a resettlement project for families displaced by conflict in the Sabiid and Caanoole areas of the Lower Shabelle region. The newly constructed housing settlement, officially named SomTurk Village, was inaugurated during a high-level ceremony attended by senior government and military officials.
The event was attended by the Minister of Interior, Ali Yusuf Hosh; the Minister of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi; the Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud; and the Commander of the TurkSom Military Training Camp, Major General Sebahattin Kalkan.
Addressing attendees, Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud reaffirmed the Federal Government’s responsibility to support communities affected by armed conflict and to facilitate their return through reconstruction and stabilization efforts. He described the housing initiative as the beginning of a broader plan to restore livelihoods and public services in the area.
“The rebuilding of homes for residents whose properties were destroyed marks an important first step. We intend to expand these efforts further. Essential services that had been disrupted will be restored, and we are determined to ensure that hostile elements do not regain a foothold in this community,” he said.
Türkiye has previously contributed to reconstruction efforts in Sabiid and Caanoole, including the rehabilitation of strategic bridges destroyed by Al-Shabaab that are critical for connectivity between the two sides of the area. Security operations have also been intensified to support long-term stabilization and enable the safe and sustainable return of displaced families.
The SomTurk Village project reflects continued bilateral cooperation between Somalia and Türkiye in post-conflict recovery, infrastructure rehabilitation, and community stabilization initiatives.
