The United States of America and the United Kingdom have supported the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia at the United Nations Security Council.
Addressing the council, the United States representatives emphasized that Washington’s policy remains rooted in respecting Somalia’s borders. The US also noted that it is aligned with the African Union and other international partners to ensure that Somalia’s unity is not undermined by external interests.
The move was also echoed by the United Kingdom at the council, who denounced Somaliland and noted that the UK reaffirms its support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence, and unity of Somalia.
“The UK does not recognize Somaliland independence, and any change to Somaliland status depends on the mutual agreement between Mogadishu and Hargeisa through dialogue and must conform to the purpose and principles of the UN charter,” said the UK representative.
The UK also regrets any action that risks undermining peace and security in the Horn of Africa.
