Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud participated in a high-level tripartite summit in Asmara alongside Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, according to Villa Somalia’s statement on Thursday. The summit focused on discussions of mutual interests, including strengthening cooperation among the three nations. The meeting also comes amidst growing reports that the leaders are considering forming a tripartite alliance aimed at countering Ethiopia’s influence in the region.

During the summit, Presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Isaias Afwerki held extensive bilateral discussions at the State House in Asmara. The two leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing their countries’ cooperation in maintaining Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence, and unity. They underscored that strengthening these elements is essential for Somalia’s development, particularly in light of the significant challenges the nation has faced over the past two decades.

President Afwerki reaffirmed Eritrea’s ongoing support for Somalia, highlighting his country’s role in training Somali national army forces. This contribution aligns with a broader policy objective aimed at building robust and sovereign institutions necessary for Somalia’s stability and development. Both leaders agreed on the need for a viable defense and security architecture as a foundation for a strong and independent Somalia.

Additionally, the two sides expressed a commitment to expanding their cooperation beyond military training, aiming to address other critical challenges related to nation-building. The leaders acknowledged that building a strong and developed Somalia requires joint efforts to enhance various sectors, reflecting a shared vision of stability and prosperity for the region.
