Bosaso (Raxanreeb Online) – Puntland authorities have released details of an overnight air operation carried out by United States unmanned aerial vehicles in the Calmiskaad mountain range of Bari region.
Officials said the drones conducted targeted strikes in the Baarakallah area of the Baalade Valley, located within the Calmiskaad mountains.
According to Puntland officials, the operation killed five ISIS-affiliated fighters, including both foreign nationals and Somalis, who had been hiding in underground caves in the area. They added that the mission was carried out as planned and that security forces will continue pursuing ISIS elements based in the Calmiskaad mountains.
In a separate development, Puntland presented a captured ISIS member of Moroccan nationality who had been responsible for handling GPS systems for the group. Puntland’s Minister of Commerce, Ahmed Shire, told the media that the suspect, identified as Abdiraxiim Binu Boros, will be brought before a court to face legal proceedings.
The ongoing security campaign in Puntland, now approaching one year, has reportedly achieved significant results. Officials say numerous hideouts and underground shelters used by ISIS leaders have been destroyed.
