Senator Osman Abukar Dubbe, a member of Somalia’s Upper House and a former Federal Minister of Information, has announced his resignation from his seat in the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Dubbe said he was stepping down on grounds of principle, arguing that personal conscience should take precedence over political office. He indicated that he had, for years, publicly opposed what he described as continued harm and pressure against people in Somaliland, saying he had repeatedly raised the issue both inside Parliament and in public spaces in Mogadishu.
Dubbe also suggested he may return to Hargeisa following what he described as Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, framing his decision as a break with the political direction taken by federal authorities in Mogadishu.
“I have spent three years standing in Parliament and on the streets of Mogadishu telling people to stop the suffering of Somalilanders,” he wrote, adding that he was often challenged to prioritise his position. “Today, I told those who govern Mogadishu that conscience is more important than a seat. While still holding the seat, I resigned today, as my elders did before in 1980.”
He concluded his statement with a message of resolve, urging others not to lose hope or live with regret.
