Somali Army Seizes Al-Shabaab Explosives in Middle Shabelle

The Somali National Army has seized a cache of landmines and explosive materials belonging to Al-Shabaab in the outskirts of the Jabad Godane area in the Middle Shabelle region, following a series of sustained security operations that recently drove the group’s fighters from the area.

Military sources said the operation was part of ongoing security efforts based on credible intelligence, which led forces to uncover a hidden site used to store landmines and other explosive devices. The materials were allegedly intended for attacks targeting civilians and for undermining security in the region.

Officers leading the operation confirmed that the site contained buried landmines, various explosive devices, and other equipment designed for acts of insecurity, which were planned to harm both security forces and local residents.

The Somali National Army has since secured the area and carried out safety checks to ensure there is no remaining threat from unexploded ordnance. Specialized teams have begun technical procedures to safely dismantle and destroy the explosives as part of broader efforts to stabilize the area and protect civilians.
