Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called for a permanent seat for Africa in the UN Security Council, terming the current formation of the council an indefensible relic of the past that must be corrected immediately.

Speaking in Addis Ababa on Sunday on the final day of the African heads of state, African Union President Mohamud said the United Nations is currently struggling under the weight of unprecedented global conflicts, political paralysis, and economic instability.

He argued that the UN’s inability to effectively manage these crises stems from a structure that no longer reflects the modern world.

“To restore confidence and efficiency in the United Nations, we must ensure it is inclusive; a council that decides the fate of millions without their direct representation cannot claim full legitimacy,” stated president Mohamud

President Mohamud pointed out that while African nations are at the front line of global peace and security peacekeeping missions, the continent remains without a permanent seat or veto power.

His resentments align with the Ezulwini consensus, which demands at least two permanent seats for Africa at the council

He also called for unity and continued diplomacy to ensure real reform based on justice and equality, insisting that Somalia is committed to strengthening and renewing the United Nations to build an international system that all continents own with participation and equal representation.
