Mogadishu (Raxanreeb Online) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, on Saturday evening hosted an iftar meeting with leaders of several registered political associations as part of ongoing consultations on the country’s political direction and democratic transition.
According to officials, the discussions focused on the prevailing political situation and efforts to strengthen Somalia’s emerging democratic institutions. President Hassan Sheikh listened to recommendations and perspectives from the political leaders regarding improvements to the electoral framework and measures to ensure inclusive political participation.
The President emphasized the importance of enhanced cooperation among political stakeholders and called on the associations to actively participate in the planned one-person, one-vote elections expected to be conducted across the country’s regions. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to broadening political engagement and advancing an electoral system that reflects the will of the Somali people.
For their part, the political association leaders underscored the importance of unity, consultation, and the preservation of political stability. They stressed that sustained dialogue and consensus-building remain critical to consolidating state institutions and achieving a democratic system grounded in popular representation.
The meeting was attended by cabinet ministers and other senior government officials.
In a related development, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is reportedly pursuing additional initiatives aimed at reopening dialogue with opposition groups. The move is seen as an effort to demonstrate his readiness to return to the negotiating table following the collapse of previous talks, with the broader objective of fostering political consensus ahead of key electoral processes.
