Political crisis deepens between Mogadishu and Baidoa

Reports indicate a deepening political dispute between senior leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia and the President of South West State, Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed (Laftagareen).

Sources familiar with the situation say the disagreement involves several federal ministers, with relations between Villa Somalia and the South West administration described as increasingly strained and entering a critical phase.

According to the reports, armed forces opposed to the administration of President Laftagareen have reportedly taken control of certain areas within South West State. In other locations, residents have expressed growing concern over the possibility of renewed armed clashes as tensions continue to rise. Some residents in South West State have also voiced calls for political change, pointing out that President Laftagareen has been in office for more than seven years.

Reports further suggest that President Laftagareen is expected to travel directly to Baidoa in the coming days after returning from Nairobi. However, the Federal Government is reportedly seeking for him to first travel to Mogadishu before proceeding to the regional capital.

Meanwhile, sources indicate that all federal government officials currently stationed in South West State have been instructed to report to Mogadishu. Some of those officials are said to have declined to comply with the directive.

At the same time, reports suggest that several federal officials are planning to travel to Baidoa as the political situation continues to develop.

The South West State administration has not yet issued an official statement regarding the developments. However, sources indicate that several meetings have been held at the presidential palace in Baidoa to discuss how the administration should respond to the unfolding political developments.

The emerging tensions have also drawn reactions from politicians and lawmakers originating from South West State. Opposition Member of Parliament Mohamed Ali called for greater transparency regarding the situation, urging leaders to address the matter openly. Senator Hussein Mohamed Dahir also expressed support for President Laftagareen in a message posted online.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Amina Eelay, one of the most prominent critics of the South West administration, issued a statement suggesting that political change may be underway, while also calling for peace and stability in the country.

The differing reactions highlight growing political divisions among leaders and representatives from South West State at a time when tensions and political debate in the region appear to be intensifying.
