MOGADISHU— Somali security forces have seized a cache of heavy weapons allegedly linked to opposition politicians in Mogadishu, according to the Commander of the Banaadir Regional Police Division, Colonel Mahdi Omar.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday from a residence in the Mirinaayo district previously occupied by former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Colonel Mahdi said the operation resulted in the confiscation of multiple heavy and light weapons, military vehicles, and ammunition.
“We have recovered 17 PKM machine guns, six DShK heavy machine guns, one anti-aircraft weapon, five RPG launchers, 14 military combat vehicles, AK-47 rifles, and significant quantities of ammunition. We still possess additional weapons beyond those already displayed, and the operation remains ongoing,” the police commander stated.
Colonel Mahdi warned that authorities would not tolerate any actions deemed capable of undermining security and stability in Mogadishu. He urged opposition figures and their supporters to cooperate with security agencies and avoid activities that could lead to unrest.
The statement comes amid escalating political tensions in the Somali capital, where the federal government has reportedly imposed movement restrictions on several opposition figures, particularly in the Mirinaayo and Howlwadaag districts.
No immediate response has been issued by opposition leaders regarding the allegations or the reported seizure of weapons.
