MOGADISHU — The Banadir Regional Court of Appeal has overturned a three-year prison sentence imposed on Sacdiya Macallin Ali, widely known as Sacdiya Bajaaj, leading to her release from custody on Wednesday.
Sacdiya was sentenced to three years in prison in late June following an earlier court ruling. Her legal team subsequently appealed the decision, requesting that the appellate court review and overturn the sentence.
The Banadir Regional Court of Appeal recently heard submissions from Sacdiya’s lawyers, who presented the grounds for their appeal and challenged the earlier judgment.
Following its review of the case, the court announced on Wednesday that it had annulled the previous ruling, effectively restoring Sacdiya’s freedom.
Hours before the decision was announced, members of Sacdiya’s family had appealed to the Banadir Regional Court of Appeal to overturn the earlier sentence and order her release.
The ruling marks a significant development in the case, bringing an end to the three-year sentence previously imposed on Sacdiya Bajaaj.
