Mogadishu – Somalia’s Al-Shabaab militant group has vowed to launch deadly attacks against businessmen and government officials accused of involvement in land grabbing and forced evictions in the capital.
In a newly released 29-minute propaganda video, the group’s spokesperson, Sheikh Ali Dheere, warned that seized land in Mogadishu “cannot be developed or constructed upon,” pledging “serious measures” against those engaged in selling or transferring public property.
The video, circulated on Al-Shabaab’s social media channels, was reportedly recorded during a graduation ceremony at the Sheikh Muhammad Mire training camp. Footage showed large formations of fighters, raising questions about how the gathering took place without detection despite ongoing U.S. and allied airstrikes targeting senior Al-Shabaab figures in recent months.
Security analysts say the release is notable for its direct reference to ongoing land disputes and forced evictions in Mogadishu—issues that have fueled widespread public anger. By framing itself as a defender of citizens’ grievances, Al-Shabaab is seeking to exploit social tensions for political and ideological gain.
The development comes as Somali security forces, backed by international partners, intensify counterterrorism operations across the country. Despite sustained military pressure, Al-Shabaab remains Somalia’s deadliest insurgent group, carrying out regular bombings, assassinations, and complex attacks targeting both government and civilian populations.
