India Rejects Somaliland Recognition, Backs Somalia’s Unity

India has reaffirmed its firm support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, distancing itself from Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland.

The position follows remarks attributed to Benjamin Netanyahu on 26 December 2025 regarding the recognition of Somaliland. Despite its close ties with Israel, India publicly rejected the move and called for respect for Somalia’s internationally recognised borders.

Speaking in New Delhi, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said India enjoys strong and longstanding relations with Somalia and stands firmly against any actions that could undermine its unity.

Jaiswal stated that India supports Somalia in opposing all forms of division and fragmentation, stressing that New Delhi’s position is rooted in its commitment to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, which safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

“India has deep and historic ties with Somalia. We reaffirm the need to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to uphold international law and the United Nations Charter,” Jaiswal said.

Israel has faced mounting criticism following its reported recognition of Somaliland and what Somalia has described as an unauthorised visit by Israel’s foreign minister to Hargeisa. The move has also reportedly drawn limited support at the United Nations Security Council, where Israel is said to have encountered diplomatic resistance, highlighting growing international opposition to any steps perceived as violating Somalia’s sovereignty.
