Fresh details are emerging following a major attack carried out by the armed group Al-Shabaab on Kudhaa Island, located approximately 100 kilometres south of the port city of Kismayo in southern Somalia.
The assault, which sources say began with a series of explosions, resulted in casualties, though the exact number of those killed or injured has yet to be officially confirmed. Initial reports indicate that Jubbaland security forces pulled back from the island following a brief but intense exchange of fire.
Kudhaa Island falls under the administration of Badhaadhe district in the Lower Juba region. The area is characterised by long coastal stretches and natural terrain known for its scenic environment and marine resources.
According to the latest information, reinforcements from Jubbaland security forces are moving toward the island in an effort to reassert control and restore security in the area.
Al-Shabaab has claimed it seized control of Kudhaa Island during the attack. However, the claim could not be independently verified, as security sources say assessments are still under way and the situation on the ground remains unclear.
The security situation remains tense, with further developments expected in the coming hours as authorities work to determine control of the area and assess the full impact of the attack.
