Mogadishu Port smashes record with a surge of cargo in the month of January.

The Mogadishu Port Authority has announced making a groundbreaking milestone in the month of January 2026, processing 21,650 twenty-foot equivalent units, making it the highest ever record in the history of the port.

The Mogadishu Port Authority Director General Ambassador Mohammed Ali Nur noted that the record-breaking throughput was achieved through a successful handling of the 16 specialized container vessels, signalling a robust start to the fiscal year.

“This represents the highest monthly performance in the port’s history, reflecting the growing confidence of international shipping companies and significant progress made in the operational efficiency,” stated Director General Nur

The recent surge in cargo at the Mogadishu Port is attributed to the growing global confidence and trust from the international shipping lines, who are placing Mogadishu Port as a reliable hub.

The Mogadishu port in 2025 expanded its terminals, which pushed its annual twenty-foot equivalent units from 150,000 to 250,000.

The port also modernized its digital tracking system, which has created an enabling environment to conduct business in Somalia.

The recent reports indicate that there is a high demand for goods in Somalia, and reaching this capacity of over 21,000 TEUs in a month shows the port’s ability to support increasing demand for imports and exports.

The port also thanks its workforce for driving the huge numbers.

“This record is a testament to the hard work, loyalty and exceptional competence of our staff; their dedication to maintaining high standards of efficiency and safety is what will allow us to compete on global scale,” added the Director General

The Mogadishu port has significantly seen growth in the number of TEUs cleared and the number of ships that arrived in the month of January 2026–January 2025.

Reports indicate that in 2025 12 ships arrived at the port compared to 16 this year; container volume in January 2025 was between 16,500 and 17,200, while in January 2026 it was 21,650.
