Puntland Forces Block Key Road Near Bosaso Over Unpaid Salaries

BOSASO— Puntland security forces protesting several months of unpaid salaries have blocked a major road in the Faluuja area of Carmo district, bringing public and commercial transport to a halt.

The road serves as a key link between the port city of Bosaso and other regions of Puntland.

An eyewitness told Raxanreeb Online that the protesting soldiers identified themselves as members of the Afmeer Brigade of the Puntland forces. The troops reportedly returned from front-line positions in the Calmiskaad mountains about a week ago after failing to receive their salaries and other financial entitlements.

The soldiers said the road would remain closed until the Puntland administration addressed their complaints over unpaid wages, which they said had continued for several months.

Local sources reported that the troops were stationed along the road with military vehicles, heavy weapons and other equipment, raising concerns about further disruption to travel and trade.

The blockade has affected the movement of passengers, traders and goods between Bosaso and surrounding regions.

Puntland’s senior military commanders and government officials have not yet issued a public statement regarding the protest or the closure of the road.

Similar incidents have occurred in Puntland in the past, with security personnel blocking roads and government facilities to demand the payment of delayed salaries.
