Puntland Forces Intensify Fight Against Daesh in Bari Region

BOSASO, Somalia – Puntland security forces are ramping up operations against Daesh militants in the mountainous Bari region, focusing on areas around Barak Ise near Dharjale. Recent ground and air assaults have reportedly inflicted heavy casualties on the militants, dismantling fortified positions, destroying makeshift camps, and seizing weapons.

The intensified campaign comes after a deadly Daesh assault on a Puntland army camp in Dharjale last week, which involved suicide bombers and direct combat. The attack prompted a robust counteroffensive, signaling Puntland’s determination to eradicate the group. Officials have emphasized the strategic importance of the operation, describing it as critical for ensuring security in the region.

The challenging topography of the Bari region, with its steep mountains and hidden valleys, continues to provide Daesh with cover, complicating Puntland’s efforts. Despite these obstacles, officials report progress, crediting the integration of intelligence and military tactics for recent gains.

Puntland’s government has called for increased international support, urging partners to share intelligence and provide resources to bolster the fight against extremism. While the operation has raised hopes for lasting peace among local residents, it also underscores the resilience of Daesh and the difficulty of eradicating its presence in the region.
