Nairobi, Kenya – December 7, 2024–The Somali Digital Media Academy (SODMA) has won the Silver Award at the Digitally Fit – East Africa 2024 Awards. The award ceremony, held in Nairobi, Kenya, was attended by over 500 organizations from East African countries, including Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burundi, to celebrate innovation and advancements in digital technology.
This award marks a significant achievement for SODMA and Somalia as a whole, being the first time a Somali institution has won such an international honor in this field. During the ceremony, Senator Okiya Andrew Omtatah, representing Busia County in Kenya, praised SODMA for its efforts in advancing education and digital skills for Somali youth.
Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u, Secretary of State at the Kenyan Ministry of ICT and Digital Economy, also commended SODMA’s contributions. In her speech, she highlighted the importance of digital skills in today’s world, saying: “SODMA Academy’s efforts are helping bridge the digital knowledge gap, and this award is a testament to the creativity and potential of East African youth.”
For Somalia, this victory is a milestone showcasing the talent and innovation of its people. Regionally, it underscores how education and collaboration can shape a better future while opening new opportunities for growth and development.
