Somali Minister Urges Youth to Embrace Presidential Amnesty and Reject Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s State Minister of Religious Affairs, Abukar Sheikh, has made a heartfelt plea to young Somalis who have joined Al-Shabaab, urging them to accept the amnesty extended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. His remarks, broadcast on state television Sunday, emphasized the dangers of being associated with the extremist group.

During the address, Sheikh highlighted how many young individuals have been misled by Al-Shabaab’s radical interpretations of Islam, which have been falsely blended with Somali cultural and religious traditions.

“This is a critical opportunity for our young citizens to break away from Al-Shabaab’s influence and benefit from the President’s amnesty,” Sheikh said. “It is a chance to reintegrate into society and pursue a peaceful and fulfilling life.”

The minister’s appeal aligns with Somalia’s ongoing efforts to counter the insurgency that has plagued the nation for years. Al-Shabaab’s actions have caused widespread conflict, and the government is determined to undermine the group’s influence. As part of this effort, President Mohamud has reaffirmed the offer of amnesty to defectors who genuinely repent and abandon the group’s ideologies.

Sheikh also called on the nation’s youth to contribute to Somalia’s rebuilding efforts and to reject the extremist ideologies that have driven decades of violence and instability.
