Somalia Orders Firms to Stop Recognizing Somaliland

The Somali government has issued a strong warning to remittance companies, instructing them to cease any references to Somaliland as an independent entity, reinforcing Somalia’s sovereignty. This directive follows actions taken against Ethiopian Airlines and Fly Dubai, which were compelled to remove “Somaliland” from their flight schedules and promotional materials, replacing it with “Somalia.”

Both airlines have complied with the government’s order, reflecting the Somali administration’s ongoing efforts to assert its territorial claims and prevent any recognition of Somaliland’s separatist aspirations. The government’s actions underscore its commitment to maintaining Somalia’s territorial integrity and rejecting any acknowledgment of Somaliland’s de facto independence.

Somalia’s firm stance is part of a broader strategy to consolidate control and deter external entities from supporting Somaliland’s bid for independence. By threatening consequences for those who violate its sovereignty, Somalia seeks to discourage other international players from making similar concessions.

This issue was further highlighted when Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, responded to a UK ambassador’s tweet, stating that the reclassification of Somalia and Somaliland under separate names is unacceptable and a direct attack on Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.
