Somaliland Executes Two Convicts for the Killing of Police Officials

Hargeisa (Raxanreeb Online) – The Somaliland government has carried out the execution of two individuals convicted of the murder of a senior police officer and a traffic police officer. The execution took place today after legal proceedings that culminated in a qisas (retributive justice) verdict.

The two men were sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Somaliland on March 6. For weeks, the families of both the victims and the convicts sought alternative resolutions, hoping for reconciliation. However, despite mediation efforts, no agreement was reached. With all legal avenues exhausted, the court’s ruling was upheld, and the execution was enforced.

Yesterday, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) signed the final order for the execution, marking the last step in the judicial process.

The case has reignited discussions on Somaliland’s justice system and the role of capital punishment. While some see it as a necessary measure for justice and deterrence, others emphasize the need for broader legal reforms and reconciliation mechanisms.

Meanwhile, Mandhera Prison remains home to numerous inmates convicted of a range of offenses, including murder, armed robbery, and other serious crimes, as Somaliland continues its efforts to maintain law and order.
