A landmine explosion in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region has left three civilians dead and one injured after their vehicle struck the explosive device in the Doonka area between Wanlaweyn and Afgooye districts. The incident occurred on Monday while the vehicle was en route from Afgooye, resulting in significant damage to the car and the tragic loss of lives, according to local officials.
Initial reports indicate that the explosion was caused by a landmine, a tactic commonly used by insurgent groups operating in the region. While no group has taken responsibility for this particular attack, Al-Shabaab, an Islamist militant organization known for targeting both civilian and military entities, including African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) forces, has been active in the area.
The deadly incident underscores the persistent security threats facing civilians in regions contested by government forces and militant groups. Despite ongoing efforts to stabilize Lower Shabelle, such attacks continue to highlight the fragile security landscape and the danger posed by landmines and other explosive devices.
In response to the tragedy, calls have been renewed for increased vigilance and extensive mine clearance operations to ensure the safety of local populations. Authorities are working to confirm the identities of the victims, while further updates on the condition of the injured passenger are awaited.
