BOSASO [Raxanreeb] – In a coordinated effort with Puntland security forces, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) launched airstrikes targeting ISIS militants hidden in the rugged Caal-Miskaad mountain range in Somalia’s Bari region. The operation, which took place on February 22, marks another step in the fight against terrorism in the area.
Local military officials reported that three ISIS members were killed in the strike, with no civilian casualties. The airstrikes were carried out to support Puntland troops conducting ground operations aimed at dismantling ISIS strongholds in the mountains, a region known for harboring militant groups.
Meanwhile, Somali government forces, working alongside AFRICOM, successfully intercepted an Al-Shabaab attack targeting military bases near Bula-Burde in the Hiraan region, preventing what could have been a deadly assault.
The United States has been actively involved in counterterrorism efforts in Somalia for years, using airstrikes to weaken both ISIS and Al-Shabaab. Recent strikes, including those authorized during former President Donald Trump’s administration, have eliminated key militant leaders, some of whom were believed to be plotting attacks beyond Somalia’s borders.
