SOMALIA: Opposition Leaders Meet in Mogadishu After Talks With President Collapse

MOGADISHU — The leadership of the Somali Future Council is scheduled to convene in Mogadishu on Monday, with officials also planning a separate closed-door session inside the Halane compound, as political tensions sharpen following the collapse of negotiations with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, sources said.

The meeting follows Sunday’s talks between the Council and the President, which ended without agreement, according to individuals familiar with the discussions. The negotiations reportedly broke down over disputes surrounding the approach to upcoming federal and federal member state elections — a central point of contention in the widening rift between the presidency and opposition blocs.

Sources said President Hassan Sheikh held firmly to his position on the electoral framework, complicating efforts to secure a political understanding.

Well-placed contacts further indicated that, after the final session ended in deadlock, the President made direct calls to several opposition figures. He is said to have urged them to wait until Monday morning and avoid issuing an immediate public statement on the failed talks, citing the need to preserve room for continued mediation efforts or a possible recalibration of the political track.

Opposition leaders are still deliberating on how to respond to the impasse. Political observers warn that, absent a compromise, the dispute could intensify and undermine both the election timetable and broader political stability.

Attention is now turning to Monday’s meeting of the Somali Future Council, which is expected to formalise the group’s next steps — including whether it will resume engagement with the presidency or pursue alternative political measures.
