MOGADISHU — Talks between the Federal Government of Somalia and representatives of opposition groups affiliated with the Future Council ended without agreement after the two sides failed to resolve key differences over the country’s electoral process.

The meeting, facilitated by representatives of the international community and the Government of Türkiye, lasted several hours and was held inside the secured compound of Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the two sides revisited the same contentious issues that had led to the collapse of previous rounds of negotiations. The main points of disagreement included the proposed introduction of direct elections, the future of the clan-based 4.5 power-sharing system and measures to safeguard the 30 per cent quota for women in political representation.

Despite prolonged discussions, the parties were unable to narrow their differences or reach a compromise on the disputed issues. The meeting therefore concluded without a formal agreement or a jointly endorsed framework for moving the political process forward.

The talks took place amid intensified diplomatic efforts to resolve the political dispute surrounding Somalia’s electoral model and the organisation of future elections.

International partners have urged the Federal Government, opposition leaders and other political stakeholders to continue dialogue and work towards an inclusive agreement that commands broad national support.

No date has yet been announced for a further round of negotiations.
