IGAD Presses Somali Government and Opposition to Reach Agreement

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development has urged Somali political leaders to continue dialogue after talks between the Federal Government of Somalia and opposition groups in Mogadishu ended without a breakthrough agreement.

In a statement issued from its headquarters in Djibouti, IGAD said it had closely followed the consultations held from 13 to 15 May 2026 and welcomed the direct engagement between Somalia’s political stakeholders.

The regional bloc called on all parties to sustain negotiations and work towards resolving the remaining contentious issues through a constructive and confidence-building process aimed at strengthening national unity.

IGAD stressed that continued political dialogue is critical to maintaining stability in Somalia, advancing state-building efforts, and supporting the country’s democratic process. The organisation also urged Somali stakeholders to prioritise solutions that promote social cohesion, strengthen public trust, and safeguard the long-term development of state institutions.

“IGAD remains fully supportive of Somali-led efforts aimed at achieving inclusive governance, lasting peace, and a secure future for Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa region,” the statement said.

The talks in Mogadishu were part of ongoing efforts to bridge political differences over key national issues, including governance, constitutional matters, and the electoral process. However, the consultations concluded without a final agreement between the parties.
