Main Streets in Mogadishu Closed to Honor Victims of 2022 Zoobe Twin Blasts

In Mogadishu today, key roads were closed to accommodate a high-profile mourning event led by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, commemorating the victims of the Zoobe intersection blasts that occurred on October 29, 2022. The closures impacted major routes, including the stretch from Zoobe to Km 4, access to Medina Hospital, and the path to Bula Hubey, significantly affecting the morning commute as residents were forced to navigate alternative routes or travel on foot.

Local Bajaj drivers, who rely heavily on these routes for their daily income, expressed frustration over the sudden roadblocks. Speaking to Radio Shabelle, several drivers raised concerns about the lack of advance notice from authorities, which left them unable to adjust their routes or inform their customers. The drivers urged officials to provide timely updates for future closures and called for policies to protect their livelihoods during such disruptions.

Drivers also reported challenges with traffic enforcement, with some alleging mistreatment during restricted movement periods. They have requested clearer guidelines from traffic authorities to ensure fair treatment when navigating alternative routes.

Frequent road closures in Mogadishu, particularly during movements by high-ranking officials like the Prime Minister, have become a common point of contention. These measures, while essential for security, continue to spotlight the balance authorities must strike between ensuring safety and mitigating disruptions to residents and the city’s economy.
