BELED HAWO— Abdirashid Janan, who had been appointed by the Federal Government of Somalia as the intelligence chief for the Gedo region, has reportedly joined the Jubaland administration following several days of talks with Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe.

Reports say Janan addressed troops under his command on Tuesday morning at a military camp on the outskirts of Beled Hawo, telling them that his dispute with the Jubaland administration had come to an end.

The forces, which had been operating under the Federal Government, were reportedly informed that a new understanding had been reached with Jubaland.

Sources also say Jubaland has agreed to take responsibility for paying the salaries of the troops stationed in the area. The soldiers are reported to have gone without salaries from the Federal Government for some time.

The development is being viewed as a significant shift in the political and security dynamics in Gedo, where the Federal Government and Jubaland have long been engaged in disputes over political authority and control of security forces.

Janan had in recent months been regarded as an important figure in the Federal Government’s efforts to maintain its presence in Beled Hawo.

During his address to the troops, Janan reportedly accused the Federal Government of failing to act in good faith in its dealings with Jubaland.

He was also reported to have criticised some senior security officials and Federal Government leaders, accusing them of pursuing personal and clan interests in their handling of national affairs.

The development comes amid a longstanding dispute between the Federal Government and the Jubaland administration, particularly over the administration of Gedo region and control of security forces deployed there.

Jubaland has reportedly agreed to receive the troops into its structures and assume responsibility for their salaries and other entitlements.
