NISA Confirms Airstrike on Al-Shabaab Gathering in Middle Shabelle

MOGADISHU— Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has confirmed that an airstrike was carried out in the Fiidow area of Middle Shabelle region, targeting a location where suspected Al-Shabaab members were reportedly holding a meeting.

In a statement issued following the operation, NISA said the strike caused casualties among those targeted, but the agency did not provide an official figure for the number of militants killed or wounded.

According to NISA, the operation was conducted in coordination with Somalia’s international security partners, who continue to support the Federal Government in aerial operations against Al-Shabaab.

Somali security forces are responsible for gathering and providing intelligence on suspected militant positions, which is then used to identify and assess potential targets. Post-strike assessments are subsequently conducted to determine the scale of casualties and damage resulting from such operations.

The United States and Türkiye are among Somalia’s international partners providing military and security support, including assistance with aerial operations targeting Al-Shabaab positions.

The latest strike comes as Somali security forces, backed by international partners, continue operations aimed at disrupting Al-Shabaab’s command structures, movements and operational capabilities across Middle Shabelle and other parts of the country.
