Somalia Elects New Speaker Amid Disputes

MOGADISHU (Raxanreeb Online) – Somali lawmakers have elected Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur (Jaamac) as the new Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia following an election held in Mogadishu.

Jaamac defeated fellow lawmaker Abdulkadir Omar Moallin (Daada), who was the other candidate contesting the position.

First Deputy Speaker Saadia announced that Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur received 142 votes, while Abdulkadir Omar Moallin secured 30 votes, confirming Jaamac’s election as the new Speaker of the House of the People.

Before his election as Speaker, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur served as a member of the House of the People and as Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated the newly elected Speaker, saying his victory reflected the confidence placed in him by members of the House of the People.

The President wished the new Speaker success in carrying out his constitutional responsibilities and urged him to lead the House with transparency, responsibility and commitment to the national interest.

President Mohamud also highlighted the important role of the House of the People in Somalia’s state-building process, particularly in legislation, representing citizens and strengthening accountability among government institutions.

He called on the new Speaker to lead Parliament in accordance with the Constitution and to prioritise national unity, consultation and the broader interests of the Somali people.
