UAE Recognition Speculation Grows Over Somaliland Ties

Pakistan-based media outlet Times of Islamabad has reported that signs are emerging which may indicate preparations by an Islamic country to formally recognize Somaliland, with the United Arab Emirates identified as the state most closely linked to the reported developments.

In its report, the publication stated that a large billboard bearing the message, “The UAE will soon recognize the Republic of Somaliland,” was recently displayed in Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa. The development has fueled speculation over a possible diplomatic shift that could significantly influence political and strategic dynamics across the Horn of Africa.

The report further noted that thousands of residents gathered in the streets of Hargeisa waving the flags of Somaliland and the United Arab Emirates, in what was described as a public demonstration of support for strengthening ties between the two sides.

The UAE has in recent years expanded its economic footprint in Somaliland through major investments, most notably in the strategic Berbera Port and related infrastructure projects. Hundreds of millions of dollars have reportedly been committed to the development of trade and logistics corridors connecting Berbera to neighboring Ethiopia.

The publication also referenced reports alleging that UAE visa systems are accepting Somaliland-issued passports, while restrictions have reportedly been placed on Somali passports. Analysts cited by the outlet suggested that such measures could be interpreted as further evidence of increasingly close relations between Abu Dhabi and Somaliland.

Neither the United Arab Emirates nor Somaliland authorities have officially announced any formal recognition decision.
