MOGADISHU—Somalia’s Federal Government has agreed to rerun parliamentary and local council elections in Galmudug after the Supreme Court annulled the results of the regional polls held on 30 July 2026, according to reports.

The decision was reportedly made at a high-level meeting chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday night. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, the Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency, the Secretary-General of the Justice and Solidarity Party, the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, and other senior officials attended the meeting.

The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the simultaneous elections for Galmudug’s House of Representatives and local councils had not been conducted in accordance with Somalia’s Constitution and electoral laws. The Court declared that the results had no legal validity.

It also ordered the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission to organise fresh elections within the earliest practicable timeframe, in full compliance with the Constitution and applicable electoral legislation.

Reports from the meeting indicate that the Federal Government is preparing to implement the ruling. An official timetable and further details on the procedures for the new elections are expected to be announced in the coming days.
