MOGADISHU— Egypt has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening and developing the capabilities of the Somali National Army as Cairo and Mogadishu seek to deepen their longstanding defense and security cooperation.

The Egyptian government said its efforts will focus on military training, enhancing the capacity of Somalia’s security institutions and expanding military cooperation between the two countries. The initiative is also intended to support the implementation of existing defense agreements and commitments between Egypt and Somalia.

The move comes as Somalia continues its efforts to rebuild and professionalize the Somali National Army and strengthen its ability to respond to the country’s security challenges.

Egypt and Somalia have stepped up bilateral cooperation in defense and security in recent years. The two governments have previously signed agreements aimed at expanding military cooperation and providing training and capacity-building support to Somali security forces.

Officials from both sides have stressed the importance of further strengthening the strategic relationship between Somalia and Egypt, particularly in the areas of defense, security and military development.

The renewed focus on defense cooperation comes as Somalia works to strengthen its national security institutions and develop a more capable and sustainable national military force.
