The security situation in Laag, on the outskirts of Bosaso, remained calm on Tuesday morning following intermittent clashes the previous afternoon between members of the Puntland Security Force and Puntland’s Darawiish forces.

Darawiish officers told local media that PSF personnel withdrew from the area overnight, leaving behind several military vehicles from which weapons had reportedly been removed.

The officers said the body of one soldier killed during the fighting was recovered at the scene. They also claimed that several PSF members had surrendered to Puntland forces operating in the area.

The whereabouts of the personnel who had been travelling in the abandoned vehicles remain unclear.

The PSF command has not issued an official statement regarding the clashes or the reported withdrawal. The force was recently incorporated into the Somali National Army units operating in Puntland.

Separately, an exchange of gunfire was reported overnight in Hafun district in the Bari region between PSF personnel and members of the Puntland Maritime Police Force.

Local sources said two vehicles belonging to the Puntland maritime forces were seized during the confrontation in the coastal district. Further details regarding casualties or arrests were not immediately available.

In a statement issued following the fighting in Laag, the Puntland authorities said their forces had completed a security operation lasting several hours.

The statement described those targeted in the operation as armed groups accused of attempting to destabilise security in the region. Puntland also alleged that the groups were receiving support from Somalia’s federal president.

The allegation has not been independently verified, and neither the Federal Government of Somalia nor the PSF leadership has publicly responded.

Puntland authorities further said their forces had seized military vehicles, various types of weapons and an unspecified number of prisoners during the operation.

The overall number of casualties remains unclear, while the security situation in Laag, Bosaso and other parts of the Bari region continues to be closely monitored.
