Puntland signals independent course amid escalating electoral tensions in Somalia

Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has issued a strong warning regarding Somalia’s political future, particularly over the ongoing electoral process, during remarks delivered in the town of Badhan.

Addressing the situation, President Deni stated that if no comprehensive political agreement is reached by 15 May 2026, the existence of a functioning federal government in Somalia would be in doubt. He emphasized that Puntland would move to safeguard its own interests, as it has done previously, and would not hold back regardless of the current federal leadership.

He further noted that Puntland is closely observing public sentiment across the country, stressing that the views of Somali citizens in all regions will play a decisive role in determining the next steps.

The statement comes at a time of heightened political tension in Somalia, with ongoing disagreements over electoral arrangements and governance frameworks continuing to pose challenges to national consensus and stability.
