Mogadishu, Somalia — The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia has reviewed the country’s overall situation, with particular focus on national security, economic development and ongoing efforts to strengthen the integrity of the Somali passport system.

During the meeting, the Cabinet approved by majority vote the Draft Law on the Rules of Origin of Goods, submitted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The proposed legislation is intended to strengthen Somalia’s trade regulatory framework and establish clear procedures for determining the country of origin of imported and exported goods.

The Ministry of Internal Security presented a comprehensive report on the Somali passport system, supported by statistical data and detailed visual information. The Ministry stated that all amendments to the personal details contained in issued passports had been suspended in order to safeguard the credibility, security and international reputation of the Somali passport.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre encouraged Cabinet ministers and other senior government officials to travel using Somali passports, stressing the importance of preserving the dignity and honour associated with public office. He also commended Second Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi for returning his foreign passport and choosing to use the Somali passport.

The Council of Ministers also approved a correction to the appointment of a member of the Judicial Service Commission, following a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. Ali Maalin was replaced by legal expert Aden Kulow Maalin Qasim.
