MOGADISHU— Turkey has launched an intensive high-level mediation initiative between Somalia’s Federal Government and opposition leaders in an effort to defuse mounting political tensions linked to the country’s electoral process and broader constitutional disagreements.

Senior Turkish officials are currently holding a series of discreet consultations with both sides in Mogadishu, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions. The talks are reportedly taking place at a secured facility within the Aden Adde International Airport compound, where separate engagements are being conducted with government and opposition representatives.

The opposition camp is understood to have delegated three senior political figures to formally represent its position during the negotiations, while top officials from the Federal Government are leading the government’s side of the dialogue.

Turkey, a longstanding strategic partner of Somalia, has assumed a direct facilitation role in the ongoing discussions, coordinating communication channels and relaying proposals between the parties as part of efforts aimed at reducing political friction and advancing a negotiated understanding.

Sources close to the process said the Deputy Chief of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has, over recent hours, conducted separate meetings with senior Somali government officials and opposition politicians in what diplomats described as “active shuttle diplomacy” designed to bridge divisions between the rival camps.

The mediation effort comes at a politically sensitive moment for Somalia, amid intensifying disagreements over the electoral framework, constitutional amendments, and the future direction of the country’s state-building process.

Political analysts and diplomatic observers increasingly view the Turkish-led initiative as the most significant mediation track currently underway in Somalia, with its outcome expected to carry major implications for the country’s political stability and institutional trajectory in the months ahead.
