MOGADISHU— Senior Somali opposition figures held a closed-door meeting with representatives of the international community amid growing political tensions over the country’s electoral process, sources familiar with the discussions said.
The meeting focused on the deepening political and security crisis linked to ongoing disputes surrounding Somalia’s election framework, which have fueled heightened tensions and recent armed confrontations in Mogadishu.
According to officials briefed on the talks, opposition leaders raised concerns over the direction of the electoral process and emphasized the need for an inclusive, consensus-based political arrangement that enjoys the confidence of all Somali stakeholders.
The opposition delegation is understood to have warned against unilateral decisions and stressed the importance of preserving political stability through dialogue and broad-based consultation.
Representatives of the international community, meanwhile, reiterated calls for restraint and urged Somali political actors to prioritize dialogue in order to prevent further escalation and avoid actions that could undermine the country’s fragile security environment.
