Türkiye Mediates as Somali Rivals Return to Negotiating Table

Talks between the Federal Government of Somalia and opposition groups are set to resume today, with discussions expected to focus on political and election-related issues.

The renewed dialogue follows weeks of behind-the-scenes efforts to bring rival political sides to the negotiating table amid continuing disagreements over Somalia’s electoral process. Türkiye is expected to mediate the first day of the talks, while international diplomats are expected to attend as observers.

According to a schedule shared with the relevant parties, the first session will bring together the Federal Government and the Somalia Future Council, a political opposition bloc that includes former presidents, former prime ministers, the leaders of Puntland and Jubbaland, and other senior political figures.

A second session is scheduled with the High Committee of Nabad iyo Nolol, representing the political camp of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.

The talks are expected to take place over two consecutive days and will include four separate meetings. On the second day, members of the international community involved in Somalia’s political process are expected to join the mediation efforts.

The dialogue is seen as a significant attempt to ease political tensions and seek common ground on disputes related to Somalia’s electoral framework.
