Airstrike Kills 12 Al-Shabaab Fighters in Somalia’s lower Shabelle region

MOGADISHU, Somalia — An allied forces airstrike supporting the Somali military has killed twelve Al-Shabaab fighters in the Haawaay area near Sablale town, Lower Shabelle region. The strike, conducted at approximately 10:48 p.m. local time on November 22, reportedly targeted a group of militants, including three senior commanders, in a significant blow to the group’s leadership structure.

According to military sources, the operation aimed to disrupt Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity and weaken its ability to coordinate attacks. The Islamist militant group, which is linked to al-Qaida has been responsible for numerous violent incidents across Somalia. Airstrikes have become a key tactic in combating the group, allowing precision targeting while reducing risks to ground troops and civilian populations.

The strike is part of an ongoing international effort to counter terrorism in the Horn of Africa. While officials have described the operation as a success, reviews are underway to assess its full impact on the local community and to ensure there were no civilian casualties. The volatile security situation in southern Somalia continues to pose challenges for both military and humanitarian efforts.
