Northeastern State Moves to Prosecute MP After Somaliland Defection

The Office of the Attorney General and the leadership of the Northeastern State Parliament have issued statements concerning former lawmaker Fahiima Yusuf Quuje after she resigned from her position and announced her decision to join Somaliland.

The parliamentary leadership published a letter dated July 10, 2026, requesting that the Attorney General initiate legal proceedings against Quuje over allegations of spreading false information and undermining the unity of the people of the Northeastern State.

In its response, the Attorney General’s Office said that a parliamentary session to consider lifting Quuje’s immunity had been scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2026, to allow possible legal action against her.

The announcement came after Quuje said on Friday night that she had resigned from the Northeastern State Parliament and aligned herself with Somaliland, which declared its separation from the rest of Somalia in 1991.

Quuje had served as a member of the Northeastern State Parliament and was among the lawmakers who elected President Abdikadir Ahmed Aw-Ali, widely known as Firdhiye.

She had also played a prominent role in the political and community mobilisation that preceded the withdrawal of Somaliland forces from Las Anod in 2023, before the establishment of the Northeastern State administration.

The authorities have not yet released further details about the legal charges that may be brought against her. Quuje has also not publicly responded to the specific allegations contained in the parliamentary letter.
