Opposition politicians in Somalia are holding a high-level consultative meeting today with a group of prominent Somali religious scholars in Mogadishu, focusing on the country’s evolving political situation.
The talks, which are expected to continue until Friday, will reportedly examine in depth the ongoing electoral process, particularly the disputes surrounding the current framework and the prospects for achieving an inclusive, consensus-based election. Sources indicate that participants are engaging in substantive discussions on Somalia’s political future, with the aim of identifying common ground and bridging divergent positions on the electoral model.
This meeting follows a series of earlier consultations between opposition figures and traditional elders from the Hawiye clans, part of broader efforts to expand dialogue and build a more inclusive national consensus.
In parallel, opposition groups are also conducting internal consultations to assess the transitional phase, maintaining that the term of office of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to expire on 15 May 2026.
