SNA Commandos Move to Restore Access on Key Mogadishu–Jowhar Route

Somali National Army (SNA) Gorgor commando forces have launched an operation to reopen the road linking Mogadishu and Jowhar, a key route connecting the capital with the administrative centre of Hirshabelle State.

The troops, equipped with heavy weapons and armoured vehicles, advanced through several strategic areas along the corridor as part of efforts to restore safe passage between the two cities.

Colonel Adan Mohamed Farah, commander of the 18th Brigade of the Gorgor Commandos, who led the operation, said the objective was to secure and reopen the approximately 90-kilometre stretch of road. He noted that reopening the route is critical for facilitating civilian movement and improving logistical access.

The Federal Government of Somalia has recently stepped up operations to reopen roads and towns that have been cut off due to insecurity. The latest move follows a previous operation in which government forces advanced to Baidoa, the capital of Bay region.

The Gorgor commandos, trained by Turkey and equipped with modern military hardware, have played a key role in ongoing operations against Al-Shabaab across several regions, including South West State, Hirshabelle, and Galmudug.

Officials say reopening major transport routes remains a priority as part of broader efforts to stabilise newly accessible areas, enhance security, and enable the delivery of essential services and humanitarian assistance.
