Mogadishu— Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Saturday officially launched the 2026 National Secondary School Certificate Examinations, with more than 44,000 Grade 12 students sitting for the exams across the country.
According to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, a total of 44,136 students are taking part in this year’s national examinations, which are being held in 58 districts across Mogadishu and other regions of Somalia.
The ministry said 158 examination centres have been prepared for the exercise, with teachers, registered ministry personnel and federal security forces deployed to ensure the smooth and secure administration of the exams.
Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Barre wished the students success and said the cooperation of students, teachers and the government was essential to building a stronger future for the country.
He also praised school administrators for their role in advancing education and strengthening the knowledge of Somali students, urging them to continue their contribution to the development of the country’s young generation.
“Our religion gives great importance to knowledge. Education is the foundation of development. I commend the Ministry of Education for consistently holding this national examination and giving it the priority it deserves. The security agencies also deserve appreciation,” Barre said.
The Grade 12 national examinations are expected to run for six days and conclude on Thursday, June 25. Students will then await the official results from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education.
