A group of pirates has hijacked a cargo vessel flying the flag of Panama while it was sailing off the coast of Puntland’s Mudug region, raising renewed concerns over maritime security in Somali waters.
The vessel was reportedly en route to Mozambique in southern Africa and was carrying 16 crew members, although their nationalities have not yet been officially confirmed. Sources indicate that the pirate group departed less than 24 hours before the attack from the Dhinowda area in Mudug, suggesting the operation was carefully planned.
This incident marks the second hijacking within a week along the Puntland coastline. On April 22, armed men seized another vessel in the coastal district of Banderbayla. The ship, reportedly linked to Pakistan, was said to be transporting goods for Somali traders.
Although piracy off the Somali coast has declined significantly in recent years, there are growing signs of a resurgence. Vessels transiting the Indian Ocean, particularly fishing and cargo ships, are increasingly being targeted.
The latest hijacking has heightened concerns over the safety of maritime routes near Somalia. Analysts warn that without prompt action, the region could face a renewed wave of piracy similar to that seen in previous years. Reports indicate that pirate activity has been on the rise since 2024, pointing to an emerging threat to maritime security in the region.
