Wadajir Party Warns Somalia’s Human Rights Commission Independence at Risk

Mogadishu – The Wadajir Party has spoken out strongly against the way Somalia’s Independent Human Rights Commission (IHRC) members are being selected, calling the process unfair and lacking in transparency.

In a statement today, the party expressed worry that the appointment process seems to be controlled from behind closed doors at Villa Somalia, where the names of the commission members are already being decided.

“This takes away the independence and integrity that the commission was meant to have,” the statement said.

The IHRC is supposed to be one of the most trusted and independent bodies in Somalia, responsible for protecting human rights. Wadajir Party says that the current process not only goes against Somalia’s Constitution and laws but also risks damaging public trust in the commission’s ability to do its job.

“The people need to believe that the commission is fair and transparent,” the statement continued. “Right now, it feels like the commission is being turned into something that serves personal interests instead of justice.”

The party is urging leaders to stop the selection process immediately and review it to ensure it’s open, transparent, and truly focused on finding qualified and independent members.
