Al-Shabaab’s suicide bombings and raid on military base near Kismayo

Jubbaland security officials have disclosed harrowing details of an audacious assault by Al-Shabaab militants on a military base located just outside Kismayo city on Thursday.

New details of the militant attack emerge.

The attack, which occurred on Thursday morning, involved the detonation of two explosive-laden vehicles followed by a direct storming of the base.

Despite the lack of official casualty figures, Al-Shabaab has released a video claiming to have inflicted significant losses, alleging the repulsion of reinforcements from U.S. and Somali forces.

The targeted base, situated in Baar Sanguuni, about 50 km (31 miles) from the port city of Kismayo, serves as the headquarters for Division 43 of the Somali National Army in Jubbaland.

The military base has faced persistent attacks from militants, with the most recent incident occurring in October 2023. During this attack, over 30 soldiers tragically lost their lives, while vehicles and ammunition were plundered. Additionally, Al-Shabaab took hostage of an undisclosed number of soldiers.
