Tensions Rise as Jubbaland Accuses Mogadishu of Meddling in Gedo Affairs

The Jubbaland State Government has accused the Federal Government of Somalia of interfering in the affairs of the Gedo region, warning that such actions could ignite fresh tensions and conflict.

In a statement released after a cabinet meeting chaired by President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe) in Kismayo, the Council of Ministers said the Federal Government’s “continued interference” in Gedo risks triggering instability and clashes that could lead to loss of life and property.

“The Federal Government’s meddling in Gedo could spark renewed hostilities and further division,” the statement read, urging Mogadishu to respect the autonomy of federal member states in line with the country’s power-sharing framework.

Ministers said the cabinet held a lengthy discussion on the Gedo issue, describing the situation as “a persistent challenge” that requires dialogue and restraint to prevent escalation.

In the same meeting, the cabinet approved the Jubbaland Health Professionals Act, submitted by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, aimed at regulating and professionalizing the health sector across the state.

The Ministry of Finance also presented the 2026 fiscal year budget, estimated at $67.2 million, which was endorsed by the Council of Ministers, according to the official communiqué.

Jubbaland has repeatedly accused the Federal Government of undermining its authority in Gedo — a region that has long been a flashpoint in relations between Kismayo and Mogadishu.
