SOMALIA: Elder Killed in Suspected Clan-Related Attack in Abudwaq

Reports from the town of Abudwaaq in the Galgaduud region indicate that a prominent community elder, Abdi Iise Qooley, was shot dead at dawn in a suspected clan-related attack.

According to local sources, armed men targeted the elder shortly after he left the mosque following Fajr (dawn) prayers. The assailants are reported to have fired several shots at him before fleeing the scene. The victim was removed from the area immediately after the attack but later died from his injuries.

Preliminary reports suggest that the killing is linked to an ongoing clan feud that has recently escalated in parts of Galgaduud, heightening tensions between communities living in the area.

The death of Abdi Iise Qooley, who was known as an educated and respected elder, adds to the rising number of killings rooted in clan vendettas across areas under the Galmudug administration. Local residents point out that regional authorities have yet to publicly address several similar incidents that have occurred in recent weeks.

Family members of the deceased and local community members have condemned the killing and called on the federal government and the Galmudug authorities to take urgent and concrete measures to halt the recurring violence.

Security forces in Abudwaaq have reportedly launched an investigation into the incident. However, no arrests have been reported so far.
